Anticipating an afternoon rainfall
I drive into the city in the early morning
To walk the dogs along the shore
From Rogers Cove to Beavermead
Ducks and geese join the dawn chorus
To greet us as we step into a spring scene
Painted in shades of grey
Mist hangs over Little Lake
Like a silver silk shawl
Soft folds shifting over the still surface
A fringe of wispy tendrils waving about the edges
Across the lake,
Looming in the background
Dark green pines
Silent sentinels of the cemetery
Mark the years ring by ring
From out of the fog, a pair of loons
Materialize as if by magic
They float facing one another
Stretching out their long necks
Calling to one another
They dip and dive side by side
Plaintive cries echoing
Along the shoreline
We stop to listen.
The dogs, intrigued by the primitive sound
Stand alert, staring into the distance
Time is suspended for the moment
Their voices hold us spellbound
Finally they drift away from us
And the haunting serenade is ended
With a shiver, we resume our walk
The fog lifts and day dawns on the lake.

Such evocative and beautiful images, Anne. It strikes me in your recent pieces and comments, that you are shaping a legacy of love from the grief that was at first, all-consuming. It is in the images you see, and the things you observe. Truly, you were loved and continue to be loved, even if from another plane.
